Speed limits in Mole Valley housing developments could be 20mph

SPEEDING laws could be changed to implement 20mph speed limits within all new residential developments in Mole Valley.

A motion put forward by the Liberal Democrats also calls for Mole Valley District Council to show support for all "twenty's plenty" groups in their fight to get speed reductions on their roads.

The motion is set to be heard by the scrutiny committee on Tuesday and Lib Dem leader David Preedy said the campaign was "as much about awareness as action".

He said: "We know we are not going to revolutionise Mole Valley's roads overnight, and that is why implementing 20mph for all new residential developments might be optimistic.

"We are just trying to get the ball moving so that more and more residents' groups are aware that we as councillors will be willing to support them.

"The decision falls with Surrey County Council to implement these restrictions but we want our district council to be clear in its support of proactive groups wanting to make a difference."

On average, 500 people are seriously injured or killed on Surrey's roads every year.

In 2006, the county council resolved to extend the implementation of 20mph zones to residential streets, but only three schemes have been introduced – none in Mole Valley. However, action groups such as Pixham Lane's 20's Plenty would receive additional backing from district councillors if the motion is passed.

Mr Preedy said: "There's a process currently in motion in Europe where lots of countries are reducing their speed limits to 20mph but unfortunately Britain is slightly behind. When I was young nobody wore seat belts and everyone drank drive and that was the done thing, and we want to get the ball rolling so in 20 years' time nobody would think to drive over 20mph."
