RAIL prices are set to rocket by as much as 5.5 per cent in January, adding hundreds of pounds to the cost of season tickets.

Fares are going up once again in 2015 for East Surrey commuters, who already pay more than £2,500 a year to travel to London and back.

Train fares are increased according to July's Retail Price Inflation figure of 2.5 per cent and capped at RPI +1 per cent. However a flex rule means some train operators can raise fares on some routes by an extra 2 per cent.

This could add a few hundred pounds to the cost of an annual season ticket on the most expensive commuter routes.

Despite pressure from transport campaigners to tackle above inflation increases, ticket prices have risen almost four times faster than wages during the current parliament.
