A CARD-CLONING device has been found on a cash machine in Horley, duping people out of hundreds of pounds.
The device was discovered by police at the ATM at the Shell Petrol Station in Brighton Road.
The discovery comes amid growing concerns over card cloning in the town, which social media users say has become more prevalent over the past two months.
Antony Abel, who runs the Horley Official Facebook Page, says he has received more than 20 complaints about the issue, the majority of which have been about the ATM in Brighton Road.
Geraldine Munday, of The Meadway, in Horley, believes her card was cloned by a device on the machine in June.
She said: "My husband was checking the bank account online and realised there was £700 gone out of our account and it had been spent in America.
"He contacted the bank straight away and obviously, because they knew we were in this country, they knew it wasn't us [spending the money]."
The couple's bank statement showed the money had been withdrawn on several different occasions.
They did not report the incident to the police but instead told Halifax, who reimbursed the money. Mrs Munday, 44, says she used the ATM at the Shell garage in the weeks leading up to the money being taken.
She added: "We have actually been lucky. I think my husband caught it in time before we went overdrawn."
It is not the first time police have investigated the cash machine. In 2012, a device that stores card details was found on the same ATM.
Dawn Groom, spokeswoman for Surrey Police, said: "Concerns were raised at a recent public meeting at Meath Green Junior School around suspicious devices found on the ATM.
"A visit to the site revealed a suspicious device on the machine and officers are urging anyone who believes they may be a victim of a fraud offence following use of this machine to contact their bank in the first instance.
"Any suspicious activity around the ATM should be reported to Surrey Police on 101."
Shell spokesman Jonathan French said: "As soon as we became aware that the ATM had been fitted with a cloning device, the machine was taken out of service.
"A new security system has been put in place to prevent this happening again and we are supporting the police with their investigation."
