Planned "rave" on Saturday cancelled after meeting opposition

A PLANNED "rave" on Saturday in a field near Godstone has been cancelled, after running into fierce opposition.

Fifty DJs had been lined up to take part in Field Fest.

The all-day event was advertised online as based in at a "secret location" off Whitewood Lane, and running until 2am, with last admissions at 1am.

Offering a "fully licensed bar", chill zones and various entertainment, its music styles were to include garage and house.

The prospect of a late-night music event in a field off the country lane alarmed some residents.

But on Tuesday, Surrey Police revealed organisers had called the whole thing off. The mystery location was, in fact, a field belonging to the Jolly Farmer pub, also in Whitewood Lane, with the event run by an outside group.

Confirming the cancellation, pub landlord Ian Tuppin told the Mirror: "For some reason both the authorities – and some idiot on Facebook – were calling it a rave, which is something I would never get involved in.

"The organisers must have spent thousands of pounds in advance of the event.

"And Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance will lose out because they were going to get the proceeds from the day."

Mr Tuppin insisted the event would have been properly stewarded and would have finished at 11pm, not 2am as stated in Field Fest's online promotion.

Paul Barton, Tandridge District Council's chief community services officer, said the authority had had no contact with event organisers, and no alcohol licence had been sought or given.

He also said there had been concerns about the event.

Tracey Osgood, the former chairman of Horne Parish Council, who lives near the event site, had feared the one-day festival could bring "absolute mayhem" to the rural area.

And a nearby resident told the Mirror: "This is madness.

"Lots of late-night noise, disturbance and litter – together with goodness knows what sort of antisocial behaviour – would be unsuitable for the countryside."

Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance spokeswoman Jill Playle said: "We did receive a call some time ago about this particular event and tried to contact the organisers to offer guidance and support but were unable to speak to them."
