A new Jubilee woodland has been created by the Surrey Wildlife Trust and children from Epsom Downs Primary School.

The woodland has been created in order to celebrate both the schools and the Queen's Jubilee year.

The school helped to plant 480 trees, which will be used as a place to encourage learning outside of the classroom.

The new woodland area will provide a fantastic habitat for mammals, birds and invertebrates. Two open glade areas have also been in cooperated in order for classes to use the woodland for learning while a woodland walk has also been planted nearer the school.

Susan Edwards, SWT People and Wildlife Manager, says; "Woodlands are an excellent learning resource, providing many opportunities for children to connect with nature including investigating habitats, adaptations and Forest Schools. The site will also play a part in restoring biodiversity to an urban area'.

"It was fantastic to see all the children trying hard to remember the location of the tree they planted, so that they could look after them as both the children and the trees grow together at the school. Pupils were also treated to a haze of ballooning spiders leaving a carpet of wispy webs across the grass and trailing from the trees and their stakes!"

There were a wide variety of species of trees planted, including oak, birch and rowan. Four Royal Oak trees were also planted, with the saplings grown from acorns from one of the Queen's Estate.
