REIGATE Grammar School have proved themselves as the third top girls' hockey school in the south of England.

Having recently won the U16 Regional South Cup, the school travelled to Tonbridge to compete in the U16 hockey South finals, where they came up against Cranleigh School in the semi-final.

Coach Becky Wickham said before the match that she expected it to be tough as she said Cranleigh were particularly strong.

And they proved to be just that as Reigate lost out 4-0, putting them into the third place playoff match against Oxford, which they won 8-0.

Caitlin Haine was instrumental in the victory, scoring a hat-trick, while Harriet Mitchell, Izzy Grant, Annie Strange, Hattie Bell and Livvie Trevor scored one goal each.

The performance in the tournament saw Reigate finish as the third top girls hockey school for this age group in the south of England, much to the delight of Wickham.

She said: "I was extremely proud of the girls. They are a great inspiration to the rest of the young hockey players in the school.

"The girls' performance and this achievement helps the school as we aspire to be the best hockey school in the area.

"We knew our group of girls was strong, but we were up against three other tough schools, including the best in Surrey.

"It just shows the calibre of the other schools that we managed to finish third and it is what we aspire to be as we move forward."

St George's School, of Surrey, won the finals, meaning they will now go on to the national stages of the competition.

But Wickham said Reigate should be proud of their own achievements, adding that the school must use the success from the tournament as a springboard to inspire future generations in the sport.

"We must build on this and look forward to next season and the future development of younger groups."

Reigate Grammar School squad: Prince, Hooper, Charitos, Mitchell (c), Strange, Smith, Nye, Jones, Hallam, Donovan, Trevor, Grant, Haine, Bell, Lynn, Coleman, Baker.
