REVISED plans for a housing development have been branded laughable by campaigners.

At a meeting of Brockham Parish Council on Monday, building firm Charles Church revealed updated plans for a 30-house development at Tanners Meadow in Strood Green.

However, residents criticised the firm's drainage strategy for a site that is "notoriously susceptible to flooding", according to a parish councillor.

Roger Abbott, of the Tanners Meadow Action Group, said: "It was a very crowded room and they came under a lot of flak from the residents.

"They presented their plans about how to deal with the drainage problem and it frankly didn't impress anyone.

"They claimed they could use roof drains to control flooding but the main concern isn't the water the falls on the site, it's the water underneath.

He added: "They are obviously aware of the problems the meadow has of flooding all year round as they have devised a strategy to fight it, but what they came up with just had us all laughing."

The proposal is for a 1.77-hectare development, with all the homes facing a central pond area which Charles Church says would help alleviate flood concerns.

Among changes to the three-hectare site, which will include six "affordable dwellings", is the reserving of three parking spaces for a nearby doctor's surgery.

But parish councillor Maurice Homewood, also a member of the Tanners Meadow Action Group, said the firm's revisions "fell on deaf ears".

He said: "Charles Church came to us and gave it their best to ease concerns about the flooding problems and traffic congestion this site could bring but they came under fire for it.

"Tanners Meadow is notoriously susceptible to flooding, as is most of the village."

Anna Mitra, spokeswoman for Charles Church, said: "Our application is going to be delayed somewhat to deal with our drainage strategy for the site.

"We are probably looking at a planning application being submitted sometime in the New Year."
