Reigatians snare fine draw

OLD REIGATIANS showed they have well and truly stopped the rot with a good performance and solid draw against Cheam.

Three weeks ago ORs were in the midst of a losing streak which had stretched to seven games, and by then they were rooted to the bottom of the league.

But two dominant victories and the battle with Cheam contrive to mean that with a win over Surbiton IV at the weekend, ORs are up to eighth.

Captain Joshua Evans, who scored his 100th goal for the club while equalising on Saturday, said he was keen for the team to push on to see how far they can go this year.

"We always expect a tough game and especially from Cheam - I know their coach on a personal level and they are very well-drilled," said Evans.

"All those losses on the trot were terrible for us and I'm just happy we found our feet eventually.

"We went for a new formation - the team need some sort of uplift. But the points we are getting now are only what we deserve.

"For my 100th goal, it was probably the best drag flick I've ever made. It feels very good to have got them with this club. After I made my way to the first team I moved to Oxted for one season but missed the club so much I came straight back."

Cheam took the lead after 15 minutes, a short corner powered home after the keeper was wrong-stepped.

But Evans' drag flick levelled things up before a skewed defensive clearance left the ball in ORs' danger zone as promptly it was smashed home for the lead.

But back came Old Reigatians with their go-to short corner routine, the ball left for Tom Wainwright to clatter into the opposition net.

The result leaves Old Reigatians in 11th place, just one point behind Cheam and two behind ninth-placed Wanderers, who have played one game more.

ORs play that game in hand this week when they travel to Surbiton 4a, who are currently fifth in the division.

Elsewhere on Saturday, in Surrey Open League division three, Old Reigatians II drew 1-1 with Woking V, with both goals netted in the first half.

In Surrey Open League Division Five, O Reigatians III lost by the odd goal in five to Kenley IV.
