A FITNESS instructor died from an overdose five days after being discharged from a mental-health unit, an inquest heard.

Matthew Porter, 29, was found "slumped on the floor" at his parent's home on July 24 this year after taking an overdose of prescribed olanzapine, an anti-psychotic drug.

Mr Porter, of Paddock Close, Beare Green, had been discharged from the Abraham Cowley Unit at Chertsey's St Peter's Hospital on July 19, and his parents believe the overdose was accidental.

His father, Nelson Porter, told the inquest: "He was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2004 and he had his ups and downs but always spoke about how he could never leave his family behind.

"He once had a conversation with his brother Josh in which he was adamant you couldn't overdose on olanzapine."

Matthew went out with friends the night before he died, and arrived at the family home in Dorking the next morning at about 9.30am.

Mr Porter said: "He said that he hadn't had any medication and therefore he couldn't sleep. He said he had had a very bad night and was really tired.

"He said he was going to have two pills to help him sleep and he went and laid down on the sofa and I went out."

He added: "I came back that afternoon and he was slumped over in the corner, face down."

It was later discovered that 14 days' worth of olanzapine was missing, as was a separate stockpile reserved by Matthew's family "in case of an emergency".

On May 30, Matthew disappeared and was found in Scotland on the hard shoulder of a motorway, which led to him being sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Speaking during the inquest at Woking Coroner's Court on Tuesday, coroner Michael Burgess said: "The toxicology report confirms that he died from acute poisoning of olanzapine and that it was a substantial overdose.

"The reasons as to why he took so much are unclear but I do not believe suicide comes in to this.

"I find no evidence to suggest that he took his own life and can only return an open verdict."
