FLY-TIPPING is now at its "highest level in years", according to a National Trust ranger.

Last week the Advertiser reported that Ranmore Common had been targeted by tippers, and now further incidents have been reported at Polesden Lacey, Dorking Road in Bookham and Hogden Lane in Ranmore.

Garden waste and builders' rubble and were among the rubbish discarded, and clean-up efforts over the last fortnight have already cost the National Trust more than £1,000.

"Fly-tipping has become a major issue," said Simon Akeroyd, garden and countryside manager at Polesden Lacey.

"When the fly tips are on our land, we have the responsibility of removing the waste from site, and so far it's cost us a lot of money and it has taken up a lot of valuable staff and volunteer time.

"The fly tips are spoiling the beauty of the Surrey Hills and are also detrimental to our important local wildlife.

"The level of tipping is the highest I've seen it for years."

Mr Akeroyd said some tippers have dumped rubbish straight on to the road, blocking access for cars and causing major traffic delays.

Vehicles attempting to drive up a verge to get around the heap of rubbish on Hogden Lane last Thursday got stuck and had to be pulled out by a tractor.

National Trust spokeswoman Esther Worboys said: "Clearing up the illegal waste is a time-consuming and unpleasant job, particularly when it is builders' waste with broken glass and the risk of asbestos.

"As well as being harmful to humans, fly-tipped waste can also pose a hazard to wildlife. Garden waste can spread plant diseases to otherwise healthy areas and one fly tip on Ranmore was dumped on top of a rare plant called heath cud weed."

Councillor James Friend, Mole Valley District Council cabinet member for environment, said: "We rely on tip offs from the public to find fly-tipping as quickly as possible.

"If a resident witnesses it taking place, we urge them to contact us with any information, particularly the details of vehicles involved.

"We are committed to protecting the environment of Mole Valley and listening to the concerns of residents."

To report fly-tipping, visit www.molevalley.gov.uk or call 01306 885001.

To alert police to suspicious activity or an incident in progress, call 101, or 999 in an emergency.
