A MASKED man walked into a Co-op store in Byfleet and pointed what he said was a gun at staff.
He demanded money from the till in the attempted robbery at the store in Oyster Lane on Sunday (December 16).
The incident took place just after 6.30am when a man wearing a balaclava threatened staff with what he claimed to be a gun concealed in a carrier bag.
No weapon was seen and the offender left the scene empty handed.
Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Tim Hadfield, said: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the Oyster Lane area of Byfleet around the time of the incident and who saw anything suspicious to contact officers with information as we need to catch the man responsible.
"This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated and Surrey Police will relentlessly pursue those responsible and bring them to justice."
No injuries were reported by members of staff following the incident.
The offender is described as a white man, of large build and over 6ft tall. He was wearing a green three quarter length jacket, blue trousers, black trainers and a balaclava covering his face.
