OXTED'S annual Christmas late-night shopping event will be a full day's celebration this year.

On Saturday, Station Road East will host the town's Christmas festivities from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

East Surrey MP Sam Gyimah will open the event and Dame Judi Dench will join the crowds to introduce some of the afternoon's musical acts.

Sue McGeown, from Elements in Station Road East, is one of the organisers. She told the Mirror: "It is hectic and exciting this close to the event.

"The community has responded really well to the idea and we have had a lot of positive comments.

"It is a lovely event for the community and it is to thank the people for their support of the traders."

Santa will set up his grotto in the NatWest while stores will hold a raffle which shoppers will be entered into if they spend £10 or more in any participating store.

In previous years the town has held a late-night shopping event on a Thursday before Christmas, but traders decided this year it was time to make the party bigger.

Ms McGeown added: "The day promises to be a great success."
