THE most notorious eyesore in Caterham could end up looking like this if ambitious regeneration plans get the go-ahead.

The former Rose and Young car showroom site in Croydon Road has stood derelict for 18 years at the gateway to the town.

An exhibition by Kent-based urban designers Kember Louden Williams next month will showcase possible uses for the land, including this plan for flats and retail.

Former district councillor Peter Longhurst, of Beechwood Road, said allowing the site to languish for so long was a "disgrace". He added: "I would rather see shops there than flats, and the town also desperately needs more parking space."

Sandra Hook, whose flat adjoins the eyesore, called for more fashion shops, adding: "Caterham badly needs a cinema, because there's little to do in the town."

Town centre jeweller Andrew Browne favoured building an "anchor store", such as Marks and Spencer or Wilkinson.

In September, Tandridge District Council said it was ready to carry out a compulsory purchase of the site if a credible developer came forward.

Kember Louden Williams spokesman Julian Black said the company was exploring opportunities for regeneration before devising firm plans.

The exhibition will be at Soper Hall in Harestone Valley Road, Caterham, on January 14 from 1pm to 5pm, and January 15 from 4pm to 7pm.
