FREEZING temperatures are expected to reach Surrey over the next couple of days, prompting a warning of snow and ice.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, meaning showers of hail, sleet and snow are expected as temperatures drop to a chilling -4 degrees.
The cold snap will hit hardest during the night, leaving icy stretches which could disrupt travel.
While snowfall has already covered parts of Scotland, the wintry weather is forecast to spread to high ground in Wales and the moors of South West England.
Currently, the likelihood of snow in Surrey and the rest of the South East is low.
However, heavy rain is expected from this afternoon (Wednesday) until Thursday morning, after which clearer, colder weather is expected to hit Surrey.
The Met Office's chief forecaster says: "There is some uncertainty over how much snow will settle at low levels, and many places within the yellow area may miss the snow altogether.
"However, where snow does occur it is likely to be heavy and produce a covering quite quickly."
