Horley pensioner forced to don wellies every time she leaves her home

A HORLEY pensioner says she has to wear wellies every time she wants to leave her home in the rain.

After the heavy downpour which drenched East Surrey last Thursday, Mary Judd's Balcombe Road front garden was completely flooded.

Mrs Judd, who is in her 70s, says it is not an isolated incident.

She told the Mirror: "Every time we have a drop of rain, it floods. It's been like this since 2012. Surrey County Council is aware of it.

"It says it is doing things about it, but it never does.

"It's this little spot of Balcombe Road and the council has not been able to do anything about it for two years. I'm constantly on to the council and my MP, Sam Gyimah. I'm a pensioner and I have to use my front gate to get out. But it's coming over my wellie boots. It's a lake."

Although Mrs Judd says the area outside her house is particularly affected, the busy road has had issues with flooding before.

It was especially affected during the Christmas floods of 2013, and a recent planning application to build nearly 50 new homes off The Close nearby was met with opposition from residents citing constant drainage concerns.

Mrs Judd says she has asked the county council several times since 2012 to resolve the issue.

She added: "They came out three months later. They put a pump on the road and sent men in to look at the drain, but after that it got worse. I struggle to get out of the house and it's slippery.

"The council make you believe it's imminent, what it is going to do, but then it's months and months of nothing.

"It's absolutely ridiculous – this is a busy B-road."

Andy Robinson, a spokesman for Surrey County Council, said: "We have spent the past two days at the scene clearing out the Thames Water culvert which has filled up with silt due to the rain.

"Thames Water spent some time last year trying to fix the problem, but it has returned.

"This culvert also leads onto rail track land, so we have contacted both of the agencies about this.

"When we have completed the ongoing work, we will advise Mrs Judd of the results and the plan."
