THE cost of parking across Reigate and Banstead is going up.

From February 2, drivers will have to pay more to park in council-owned car parks in Redhill, Reigate, Horley and Banstead.

Those who park in the towns all day will be hardest hit, with the cost of a ten-hour stay going up from £5.50 to £5.80 at Gloucester Road, Linkfield Road and Clarendon Road in Redhill and Town Hall, Bancroft Road, Upper West Street and Bell Street in Reigate.

It will still cost 40p for 20 minutes, however, and £1.20 for an hour's stay.

Car parks in Horley and Banstead remain cheapest, with up to ten hours parking going up 20p to £4.80 at Central, High Street and Victoria Road car parks in Horley and Banstead's High Street car park.

Twenty minutes will cost 40p while an hour's stay will increase from £1 to £1.10.

Most car parks across the borough will continue to charge a flat fee of £1 on Sundays.

Shoppers say the increased rates will not put them off visiting. In Redhill town centre Ayana Campbell, 28, said she would continue to use Marketfield Way car park.

She said: "It would not put me off coming. We're local so we come here a lot and it would still be cheaper than using the Belfry car park."

Gloucester Road car park user Jayne Rudd, 59, from Warlingham, said: "We don't come here often but we found it was a reasonable cost for a town centre car park. It's cheaper than most others."

Council parking manager Jacquie Joseph said: "Parking charges are usually reviewed annually to ensure they are in line with neighbouring boroughs and remain attractive to users."

Cash from car parks goes towards parking and transport services and maintenance.
