A CAMPAIGNER has climbed on the roof of Redhill Magistrates' Court ahead of appearing on trial for setting up camp on the roof of Justice Secretary Chris Grayling's home in Ashtead.
Martin Matthews, of Middlemead Road, Bookham, climbed onto the property with food, supplies, a tent and a banner reading "mums and dads united" on August 19 last year, and was later arrested and charged with criminal damage of an unknown value to the roof.
The New Fathers 4 Justice campaigner pleaded not guilty to the charge at a hearing in September and is scheduled to appear on trial this morning (Wednesday).
Mr Matthews climbed on to the roof of the Magistrates' Court at about 8.30 this morning, returning safely to the ground about an hour later.
Staff are currently preventing four supporters of Mr Matthews from entering the court over concerns they will "disrupt proceedings".
Mr Grayling was expected to be attending today to give evidence at the trial, but it has now been confirmed that he will not be appearing.
