A HUGELY successful new Women's Institute and a wedding fair are part of plans to revitalise Caterham's historic Soper Hall.

The 104-year-old building in Harestone Valley Road was taken over three years ago by residents-led group the Soper Hall Community Centre (SHCC), to run for community use.

But it went through a turbulent spell last year, including low bookings and mass resignations from its management. Seven directors resigned last summer and two more were dismissed.

But the hall has now been given a new lease of life.

The inaugural meeting of the Caterham WI, held there on January 20, drew an incredible 150 people and about 20 would-be new recruits had to be turned away.

Its new committee is looking at possibly establishing two groups, with initial meetings including cocktail-making demonstrations and a chocolate-related evening. The next meeting will take place on Thursday, February 12 from 7.30pm.

A wedding fayre being held in the hall on Saturday between 11am and 3pm will feature more than 20 stalls and a fashion show by Helena Fortley Bridal Boutique of Caterham.

Beverley Connolly, chairman of SHCC, said: "The hall is busy and thriving.

"Our regular hirers include Zumba, dance classes, a rock choir, adult education classes, art groups, Caterham Valley Parish Council, a personal trainer, the Citizens Advice Bureau and an architect.

"The hall is also regularly booked with parties and celebrations of all descriptions, meetings and training sessions."

An open afternoon is being held at the hall tomorrow (Friday) from 4pm to 6pm.

Visitors can enjoy drinks and canapes, meet board members and regular hirers, and enter a fundraising raffle.

Also planned is a spring craft fair on March 7, and the first of a regular farmers' market on April 5.

Almost 1,000 people attended the Caterham Beer Festival there in November, while a Christmas fair raised about £1,000 towards running costs.

A contingency fund is being set up to provide for essential repairs and maintenance of the hall.

And two new board members are in place: Caterham resident Charlotte Drinkwater is the regional sales manager for the Gleneagles Hotel, while former Tandridge councillor Chris Camden has been re-appointed to the board with responsibility for maintaining the building.

It follows the departure of former board members Sally Marks and Mark Jones.

More help is sought to support the hall, especially in fundraising and legal matters.
