SURREY Mirror readers, you have once again stunned us with your generosity.

Our offices have been inundated with tins, packets and jars, kindly donated by you for our Food for Christmas appeal.

We have received staples that will fill empty cupboards into the new year, and festive goodies to help those who struggle at Christmas.

As you read this, our elves will be distributing the donations to local organisations and charities who help those in need, or provide some festive cheer, in time for Christmas.

One of those organisations is the Easter Project, in Reigate, which provides a hot meal and companionship to dozens of people every week.

Donations will be used to help people in crisis, and distributed to the elderly and disadvantaged.

Chris Gladstone, one of the organisers, said: "What to some people might be a normal day's or week's shopping, to another family is an absolute lifesaver. It is simple, but that is a fact.

"It is great that people know that others care, that they are prepared to give anonymously and just out of the goodness of their hearts.

"It is brilliant, I think it is amazing, and it does save lives, literally and emotionally."

Tara Young, 42, of Reigate, had to make two visits to Surrey Mirror HQ because she had so many bags of goodies to drop off.

She spent £30 and picked up every non-perishable item we had appealed for, all in memory of her beloved mum.

"I lost my mum five years ago," she said. "Her birthday was on December 1.

"I always give money to the Poppy Appeal as a birthday present to her and then every year I give the money I would have spent on her at Christmas to charity.

"I decided to do this one this year. I really liked the cause."

Barbara Pay, 75, of Redhill, was another reader who contributed to the appeal.

"I am very lucky and can do things for Christmas for myself and my family, so I like to do a little bit for others where I can.

"It just makes you think how lucky you are, there are an awful lot of people struggling," she said.

Other homes for your gifts include the Merstham Easter Project, East Surrey charity Welcare, the Reigate and Banstead Winter Night Shelter and the Merstham food bank.
