Horley pensioner blasts Surrey County Council for redesigning junction

A PENSIONER has blasted Surrey County Council for its "poor" redesign of a junction in Hookwood.

The authority redesigned the Reigate Road junction near The Black Horse pub early last year.

Previously, drivers approaching from Mill Lane would merge into Reigate Road, but now they are forced to stop and give way before joining the highway, which leads to Tesco in Hookwood.

David Cleggs of Horley told the Mirror: "It was just a filtering system and it was fine, it worked for years. They have redesigned it and now it's almost a 90-degree angle on a single lane. It's an accident waiting to happen. You have got to turn your head 90 degrees."

Mr Cleggs, of Chequers Drive, added: "I have written to the council and said there's going to be an accident. If you are old it's difficult to turn your head that much to look.

"There were a couple of near misses the other day. You take your life in your hands every time you use it."

A county council spokesman said: "Before this scheme was introduced there were a number of accidents resulting in injury, due to attempted U-turn manoeuvres, but since the work was completed in March 2014 and the speed limit was lowered to 40mph, there has be no serious incidents at this junction."
