STAFF at a Merstham charity shop have set their sights on creating the world's longest trail of coins.

Volunteers at Script will attempt to break the world record, which currently stands at 46.75 miles, in August.

Script's owners, who also have a branch in West Sussex, decided to attempt the feat to raise awareness of their cause – helping women in Calcutta – as well as funds.

Sue Reeves, manager of the High Street store, told the Mirror: "We do house clearances to fund the charity, that was my brother-in-law's plan, but as it's growing we need more money and the business can't grow that fast so we thought this year we would start a fundraising venture."

Mrs Reeves, 55, added: "We are very hopeful of doing it and raising money from it.

"We need 4.6 million coins, and if that was all in pennies that would be £46,000. But there might be that odd old coin that is worth more than the rest of it combined."

Script works to help save Indian girls and women from the brothels of Calcutta.

Every month the charity raises about £3,500 to help nine children in a residential school, five women living in a shelter and 35 women working in a workshop.

The volunteers are looking for any currency, British or foreign, in or out of use, to help break the record.

The record attempt will take place at Ford Airfield near Climping, West Sussex, on August 31.

Collection boxes have been placed across the county to help gather coins from further afield.

Mrs Reeves, who used to work in Newton's Music Shop in Merstham, said: "We are going to need so many people to help lay them, it's not just gathering coins, we also need to start gathering volunteers to come and spend time laying them.

"We have worked out it would take 80 people 16 hours to complete, so we need a lot more than 80 volunteers."

So far the venture is going to plan.

"Many people have visited the store to drop off coins and Mrs Reeve's daughter's singing and violin teacher handed over more than two and a half stone of two and one pence pieces."

She added: "We have collected quite a few already because a lot of people seem to have stashes of coins one way or another and the charity appeals to them.

"It's smaller and they know where the money's going."
