Chaldon wins battle over voting boundaries

RELIEF and delight has followed the news that Chaldon is to remain in the East Surrey Parliamentary constituency.

A Boundary Commission shake-up proposed earlier this year recommended that the village be moved into the neighbouring Reigate constituency.

This would have meant residents would have been served by Reigate MP Crispin Blunt, whilst still coming under Tandridge District Council.

But the Boundary Commission has now announced that the East Surrey constituency will remain as it is.

Its report concluded: "From the large number of responses, it is also clear that local ties – including with Caterham – would be broken."

Pamela Parker, from East Surrey Conservative Association, coordinated the campaign of opposition, which included more than 100 letters of objection.

She said: "Chaldon responded to this threat in their expected manner of passion and love of their village."

Chaldon district councillor Pat Cannon added: "I'm delighted with the outcome. We have shopping, transport and community links with the Caterham area, and it was important we stayed in East Surrey."
