WITNESSES are being urged to come forward after a woman was assaulted in an alleyway in Caterham in the early hours of Saturday.
The victim, in her 20s, was walking through an alleyway between Whyteleafe Road and Burntwood Lane at about 12.45am when an unkown man approached her and pulled at her clothes causing her to fall to the floor.
She managed to get up and run to safety. The incident was then reported to the police, and the victim only suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident.
Sergeant Simon Gray, investigating, said: "This is a concerning incident that has understandably caused huge distress to the victim. We have carried out extensive enquiries already and will be continuing to make house to house enquiries and review any CCTV opportunities in the coming days."
The suspect is described as a white man in his early 20s, about 5ft 9ins tall, of slim build with broad shoulders. He had stubble on his face and was wearing a dark coloured hoodie with a thick white zip and dark baggy jeans which were low on the waist.
Senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Sang, said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who was in this area who recalls seeing a man matching the suspects description. Given the time of the morning, he may have been making his way back from one of the public houses in the town and I would urge anyone who may have information about this man's identity to get in touch immediately."
Neighbourhood Inspector Angie Austin said: "I would like to reassure residents that incidents of this nature are very rare in Caterham. The Safer Neighbourhood Team is working closely with detectives and will be increasing patrols in the area to deal with any concerns arising off the back of this incident."
Anyone with information should call 101, quoting reference TD/13/76, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
