ENTERPRISING youngsters made a cash splash when they staged a fundraising car wash on Saturday.

They battled through the afternoon's rain to raise £241 in the Tesco supermarket car park off Coulsdon Road, Caterham.

The money will go to the youth cafe based in the nearby Arc arts centre off Weston Drive, where the hard-working teenagers are all members.

The cafe, for ages 14 to 17, runs on Tuesdays from 6.30pm to 9pm.

The washers were helped by Arc supporters including Caterham Hill neighbourhood officer PC Andy Simms and Caterham district councillor David Gosling.

PC Simms, who helped to organise the event, said: "A number of customers asked if we were going to be here next week, and others were surprised at how shiny their cars looked.

"This area has had its share of antisocial behaviour problems from youths in previous years, but things like the youth cafe have provided an important outlet and the problems have greatly diminished."
