A 39-STONE bell has been stolen from an industrial site in Bletchingley.
Police are appealing for information after the clock tower bell was taken between 11pm on Sunday and 6am on Monday.
The bell was taken from the Brewer Street site and resident David Martin said: "I simply do not understand how they could have lifted that much weight in one go. It must have taken a few of them to do it, or maybe a crane.
"I believe that it used to belong to a bell foundry company called Gillett and Johnstone."
Police are now warning scrap metal merchants to be aware of the bell passing through their gates.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Dave Every, from Reigate CID, said: "Someone somewhere must know what happened to this bell after it was stolen and I would appeal to anyone who believes they have information on its whereabouts to contact officers with information.
"We believe the bell will be used as scrap and I would urge any dealer who is offered an item like this for sale to get in touch."
Witnesses are asked to call Surrey Police on 101.
