GUILDFORD residents will have to pay 1.9 per cent more council tax this year to their local authority.
Councillors agreed to increase Guildford Borough Council's share of the tax, equivalent to an additional £2.74 for a Band D property for 2013-2014, at a meeting last Thursday night (February 14).
Cllr Stephen Mansbridge, leader of the council, said: "This increase helps us to continue to deliver high quality services for our residents and reduce the risk of higher rises in the future."
The council will need to claw back £961,000 in savings over the next financial year and has already recouped more than £5million in cuts and changes to its services over the past two years.
The authority is also working on a programme of upgrades, including a £7 million spend on improving existing council homes and investing £10 million in new affordable homes over the next two years.
