THE Year Seven District Indoor Athletics Competition took place at Reigate College on Wednesday afternoon.

Twenty Reigate College students were trained up to officiate the event, volunteering to run the activities, which ranged from sprint relays to shot put and triple jump.

The students worked hard throughout the afternoon, coaching jumping and throwing techniques, as well as time-keeping and result recording.

They showed plenty of enthusiasm and commitment throughout the event and found it a very worthwhile experience.

The atmosphere was electric inside the sports hall, with the children screaming, shouting and encouraging on the other athletes.

Zoe Fossett, one of the student volunteers, said that it was a really positive event.

"The kids were really enthusiastic and competitive and seemed to enjoy being here," she said.

The competition was organised by UK Athletics, who supplied all the equipment and trained up the college sport leaders beforehand, with the main aim to encourage wider participation in athletics across the country.

The event was put together through work by Abigail Price, the school games organiser from Active Surrey, and Chris Lowe, the sports co-ordinator at Reigate College.

Price said: "More than 70 Year Seven pupils from local secondary schools took part in the boys and girls sports hall athletics event at Reigate College.

"The competitive event saw St Bede's, Oxted, De Stafford, Royal Alexandra & Albert, and the Beacon battle it out for a spot at the Surrey School Games county final in March at the Guildford Spectrum.

"Congratulations to De Stafford and Royal Alexandra & Albert boys teams, and St Bede's and Oxted girls' teams, who will now be representing South East Surrey in the next round."
