THE big bad wolf, Miss Havisham and Oompa Loompas were among the eye-catching characters spotted at schools across east Surrey.
It formed part of children's World Book Day efforts on Thursday last week.
In the junior department of the Royal Alexandra and Albert School in Reigate, pupils were treated to a fancy dress day based on their favourite heroes and villains, with pupils showing up in imaginative costumes like Batman, Superman and Hulk Hogan. After a morning of literacy activities pupils held a fancy dress parade with the best costumes winning a prize.
Literacy co-ordinator Dionne Bradley said: "The aim of Book Week is to focus on literacy in practical and unusual ways.
"Pupils have been planning their outfits for the last few weeks and the results are amazing."
Meanwhile at Warlingham Park School, Roald Dahl was the theme of the day with pupils dressing as their favourite characters from the writer's books. The day was packed with reading and re-enactments and musical performances.
Head teacher Mike Donald said: "The pupils had the chance to be their favourite characters and act out the stories that they enjoy so much."
At over at de Stafford School in Burntwood Lane, Caterham, pupils paid £1 to dress as book characters, with the proceeds going towards Kindles for students to use in lessons.
In addition, teachers decorated their doors as book covers, or as famous doors from books.
The school also launched its first reading challenge.
Year 7 students read books from a recommended list to receive "air miles". These equate to points which can be spent on things varying from sports equipment to mobile top-ups.
