CYCLING the length of Britain, becoming a qualified ski instructor and singing five days a week in a cathedral – its all part of "action man" Matt Barnaville's world.
And the 22-year-old, who has already achieved more goals than many people manage in a lifetime, has now set his sights on his next big challenge – vying for a place in the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race.
The race involves a 7,000-mile, 53-day voyage from Australia to Singapore, starting in December.
Matt, of Alexander Crescent in Caterham, was inspired to become an adventurer after reading Virgin founder Richard Branson's autobiography.
Matt said: "He had pushed himself to the extreme when breaking every significant hot air balloon record. But this wasn't enough and the transatlantic sailing record was his next big step."
The public's votes, coupled with an individual's application form, will determine who wins a coveted place in the race.
It is only the latest in a series of challenges for the music student at the University of Wales in Cardiff. Last August he and a friend cycled 1,100 miles from Land's End to John o' Groats and raised £1,500 for the Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy.
En route they endured torrential rain, buckled spokes and brake pads falling off.
An accomplished skier since he was a teenager, Matt achieved his British Association of Ski Instructors' licence the same month, following a testing week on an Austrian glacier.
He also sings semi-professionally at nearby Llandaff Cathedral and performs with the Vox Ensemble, a Cardiff-based vocal octet.
Matt said: "Sailing round the world will be, without doubt, the most incredible experience I have had yet."
His father Kevin told the Mirror: "He would rather do adventurous stuff than sitting on a beach in somewhere like Malaga.
"For his 21st birthday, I gave Matt £1,000 to spend on a 'summer of freedom'.
"Instead he devoted the money to buying a bike and equipment for the cycle ride, and towards the ski instructors' course."
