Local History at Kingswood School
Classes 3,4 at Kingswood Primary School have been doing much work on the local history of the school and Lower Kingswood. On the afternoon of Wednesday March 20th they went to the Evangelical Church in Smithy Lane, there they were greeted by the Pastor at the church Jim Murkett and five local villagers. They were all divided into groups, and one half went into the church where Mr Murkett was able to explain all about the old and new buildings of the church. The other half were then split into three groups to speak and ask questions of the villagers. These villagers had all either lived or came to live in the village for a good number of years. The children asked many questions about life at school, or how village life was and what the punishments were when the villagers attended school. They also wished to know how the village was in earlier days and how many shops there were, they were very surprised to learn how many and how varied they were. The A217 was of great interest to them, as it was in early days it was a single road, but also explained was that it was a busy road, from London to Brighton. The children were very interested in everything, they then swapped over the groups, so could then learn about life at the church and village. It was a very nice afternoon, although it did test memories. The children then walked back to school accompanied by teachers and helpers, as they had to cross the dreaded A217, but luckily the traffic was helpful. The villagers who came along then enjoyed a cuppa and a chat. All were delighted to have since received a card and letter thanking them for their time, from the children and school. Taking part were Jim Murkett, John and Jenny Bass, Jeanette Grimshaw, Mollie Smith and Judy Parfitt.
Snow
Villagers waking up on Saturday morning, and pulling back curtains were surprised to see a white scene. The snow was a very wet type and roads soon turned to slush. Luckily there was not such a bitter wind,as in earlier days. It was a bit much for all to hear about the warm weather this time last year, and be reminded that then we were in the throes of a drought.
DistrictCowhorn.
Sunday morning March 18th saw a very busy scene in Buckland Road, and traffic was extremely busy and parking was very difficult, as Scout groups arrived at the Scout Hut in Buckland Road and the football teams who play for Kingswood Falcons and Church goers all tried to park. The Scout groups came from across the Reigate District and some from Horley. The weather was so wet, and so the groups had a tricky time as they walked around Colley Hill and Walton Heath.
