Five men arrested after police officer assaulted outside JJ Whispers in Reigate High Street

Five men were arrested after a police officer was assaulted while responding to an incident outside JJ Whispers.

The incident happened at about 1.30am on Friday, March 29 outside the nightclub in Reigate High Street.

Officers were on routine patrol when they noticed a disturbance and tried to intervene. One of the officers was assaulted and went to East Surrey Hospital for treatment to abdomen injuries.

He has since returned to duty.

Three men aged 18 from Tadworth, Esher and Surbiton were arrested with two 25-year-old men from Redhill and Reigate on suspicion of public order and assaulting a police officer. They have all been released on police bail until Thursday, May 9 while the investigation continues.

Detective sergeant Antony Preston from Reigate CID said: "Although we have already spoken to a number of witnesses I would continue to urge anyone who witnesses this incident or the events leading up to it to contact officers with information.

"This incident demonstrates the dangers police officers face on a daily basis. Thankfully on this occasion the officer was not seriously injured and has been able to return to work."
