A 60-MINUTE power cut failed to spoil the diamond wedding anniversary celebrations of a couple from Beare Green.
Leith Road residents Alice and Bill Bradley – aged 87 and 90 respectively – and their 45 guests were left scrabbling for candles when a party in the village hall with family, friends and members of their weekly Evergreens retiree club was plunged into darkness on Saturday night.
Mrs Bradley said: "We had to run around to find some candles, but that made it quite romantic. It's just a shame that the music had to stop."
The couple, a former canteen worker and a bricklayer, have lived in the village since they married at St Paul's Church in Dorking in 1953, and raised five children.
Mrs Bradley put the success of the relationship down to "always talking and doing everything together".
She added: "If we had an argument we always said goodnight to each other and the next day it was all forgotten."
