POLICE were called to quell a brawl between teenagers in Caterham town centre.
The incident broke out at about 5.30pm last Thursday, in Croydon Road, when about 30 youths gathered and punches were thrown.
It prompted a Twitter message from a concerned local resident who wrote: "Does anyone know what all the police, screaming and shouting was all about?"
Nick Stone, a Caterham Valley PCSO, explained: "The gathering was a scuffle between different teenagers – because of a text message sent from one boy to another's girlfriend.
"Respective groups of friends turned out to show support for the two different parties.
"There were a few scuffles and two arrests for public order, one of whom was de-arrested when things got calm.
"The kids then dispersed over time.
"A few kids received a few punches – and that was it."
Tandridge neighbourhood Inspector Angie Austin said: "There were lots of police due to reports of a large-scale fight.
"Our presence saw that only minor stuff had to be dealt with.
"It was nothing serious."
A 16-year-old boy has been bailed to return to Caterham police station on June 10, while police investigations continue.
