AROUND 10,000 lives are lost to coronary heart disease every year in the south east, according to the British Heart Foundation. The statistics reveal that Tandridge has one of the lowest death rates caused by the UK's biggest killer. Between 2009 and 2011 there were 51 deaths caused by the illness in the district, this is compared to worst in the county Tameside, with 132. There were 51 deaths caused by the disease in Tandridge between 2009 and 2011. Residents in Reigate and Banstead had 58 deaths to the disease, which is lower than Guildford who had 59. The charity, which focuses on research into heart problems, has now launched a campaign called Fight For Every Heartbeat. Coronary heart disease is the UK's single biggest killer and the charity is calling on people living in the south east to fight back against the disease by supporting their life-saving research. Professor Peter Weissberg, BHF medical director, said: "We're fighting for every heartbeat - regardless of a person's postcode. Our new campaign will bring this urgent fight to the public's attention. "With the support of people living in the south east we can, and will, beat heart disease." In the new hard-hitting campaign, heart patients and a BHF Professor unite to hail research as the weapon needed to win the battle against heart disease. The "shocking" TV advert includes the moment that sent a chill across the nation – Fabrice Muamba's cardiac arrest. BHF Professor Mark Kearney, a researcher, cardiologist and the face of the TV advert, said: "Heart disease devastates too many lives. "Every day in the clinic I hate seeing its impact on children, parents and grandparents. "I'm searching for a breakthrough to put an end to the suffering. But medical research costs money and the BHF urgently needs support to rid the UK of heart disease and the misery it brings."
