Carshalton boss still believes safety is on

Carshalton Athletic manager Tommy Williams still believes in Ryman Premier survival despite his team missing out on three precious points last Saturday, writes James Barrett.

The Robins succumbed to a goal in each half by promotion-chasing Wealdstone which now means Williams and his squad have to wait on other results during the week to understand how vital Saturday's trip to Enfield Town will be.

"I was disappointed with the result mainly because we didn't get anywhere near the level of performance we have shown recently," Williams said. "Wealdstone did the ugly side of the game well and made it hard for us to break them down after taking the lead."

Williams put three strikers up top once Wealdstone scored their second on 68 minutes to no avail, but it was a penalty incident on the hour that he was left to rue most.

"I did feel it was a penalty when Mark (Goodman) was sandwiched in their box," he added. "The potential for us to score at that point would've opened the game up and given us momentum, but it wasn't our day."

Carshalton can potentially end the season with 40 points but relegation rivals Lewes and Thurrock both picked up points from games played Tuesday night. Thurrock are now uncatchable by the Robins and Lewes have a better goal difference that may still seperate the sides despite how results may pan out this weekend.

Hastings United, currently the only team beneath the Robins, and Wingate and Finchley both play their last games in hand tonight and, if both sides lose, that would give Carshalton a very real chance of staying up.

"My players have given me everything over the past few weeks, I couldn't have asked for much more. We're getting together Thursday for a training session and to keep tabs on the results," said Williams. "If things go our way then we can at least go into the last game knowing we have a say in our destiny. I've kept saying that there will be twists and turns before the season runs its course and I've being proved right up tonow."
