THE crucial public examination of the council plan which will guide where thousands of homes are built in Reigate and Banstead up to 2027 continues today. The Core Strategy, which will also dictate what areas of green belt may be bulldozed to make way for homes, is currently the subject of a seven-day inquiry by a Government planning inspector. Today, Wednesday, the debate will focus on the scale of housing and development proposed within the strategy. The inspector will hear evidence on "whether the proposed amounts of housing and employment development meet the objectively assessed needs of the borough, and if not, is there justification for a lower level of growth." On the opening day yesterday, developers called for the annual housing target of 460 new homes to be increased. However, green belt campaigners have argued it should be reduced. During the hearing, at Reigate Town Hall, members of the public, councillors and developers will be among those making arguments in relation to the strategy. The public are able to attend.
