There was a bumper crop of entries at the spring show run by the Caterham & District Horticultural Society last Saturday.  It took place at Hillcroft School, Chaldon Rd, Caterham.  Society President Roger Davies presented the trophies to some of the 27 hopefuls who had entered the 42 classes. Entries ranged from floral arrangements to marmalade and children's handwriting.Show Secretary Robert Kelly was running the spring show, he said: "The show was a great success. Considering the weather we had a far greater response than anticipated. 27 local people entered. I particularly enjoyed the high standard of the horticultural exhibits."The Spring Cup for the best exhibit (horticultural classes) in the show went to Peter Daniels.  The F.G. Brind Cup for the most points in adult categories 10 - 22 (which included spring flowers and an exhibit of vegetables) was Joe Perera.  The Woolwich Building Society Cup for the best in children's classes went to Tabitha Wren. Young people excel at handicrafts so Caterham Valley Parish Council sponsored an exciting new category to the spring show. The children's table exhibits were made up of flowers and/or handicrafts. Parish council Chairman, Michael Lincoln, presented the first prize of £25 to the 9th Caterham Guides. The exhibit included many individually designed paper flowers planted into two grassy hillocks. Guide Penny Brown volunteered to set up the exhibit. Penny said: "We just went for it. We wanted it to be colourful and varied. We built the exhibit over two sessions."The second prize of £15 went to the 1st Caterham Brownies for their exhibit. It included 'stained glass' cards made as part of the Brownies' World Culture badge. Seven Brownies set up the exhibit, which took two weeks to prepare. The third prize of £10 went to the 4th Caterham Brownies for their egg-cellent exhibit of Easter decorations. The next show will be on the 20th July at Hillcroft School, Chaldon Road, Caterham.  For further details see the facebook page for Caterham District HortiSoc
