METAL detectorists are on the hunt for the owner of a gold bracelet bearing the name "Charmian" which could have lain lost in a field for 40 years.

Members of the East Surrey Research and Recovery Group were scouring fields between Reigate and Betchworth when they made the discovery on Tuesday last week.

Club secretary Roger Mintey said: "One detectorist showed it to his fellow detectorist, who identified it as being made of 9 carat gold, hallmarked 'Birmingham 1969'.

"Suspended from the bracelet was a disc bearing the inscription 'Charmian March 13 1971'."

Mr Mintey found and contacted a woman in Betchworth called Charmian.

Although the jewellery was not hers, she suggested the bracelet's owner was probably Charmian de Laszlo, whose family had owned the land where the bracelet was found in the 1970s.

If you can help,  contact Mr  Mintey on 01737 243761.
