MOLE Valley District Council says it is "wholly committed" to improving supermarket shopping opportunities in Dorking following the collapse of a bid to build a new Sainsbury's.
It was announced on Friday that the chain had abandoned plans to build a superstore behind St Martin's Walk – a site described as "the best for such a development in the town" after two years of negotiations with the council and landowners.
On Monday, a council statement said discussions had come to an end "despite the best intentions of all parties".
John Northcott, the council's planning portfolio holder, said: "It is very disappointing that this particular proposal cannot be developed, but the council remains fully committed to improving supermarket provision in that part of the town.
"This will save many of our local residents from having to do their weekly shop in other towns outside the district, and will ensure the future vitality of the beautiful market town that is Dorking."
