A BILL allowing gay marriage in England and Wales was passed despite the objections of four Surrey MPs.
MPs voted in favour of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill by 366 to 161, meaning it will now be heard in the House of Lords.
Mole Valley MP Sir Paul Beresford was one of 133 Tories to oppose the bill, which came after he told the Advertiser his voting "matched the convictions of people" in his constituency.
Fellow Surrey MPs Anne Milton (Guildford), Kwasi Kwarteng (Spelthorne), Jonathan Lord (Woking) also voted against the bill.
The 56-page document lays out plans to legalise gay marriage, but "safeguards" for religious organisations mean they may not have to perform ceremonies.
Chris Grayling, MP for Ashtead, voted in favour of the bill along with fellow Surrey MPs Crispin Blunt (Reigate), Michael Gove (Surrey Heath), Sam Gyimah (East Surrey), Philip Hammond (Runnymede and Weybridge), Jeremy Hunt (South West Surrey), and Dominic Raab (Esher and Walton).
