Leatherhead blip blemishes record

MATT JOBLIN is hoping Leatherhead's 34-run defeat to Farnham on Saturday was just a small blip for his side.

Leatherhead lost out in a low-scoring Division One contest, after they were bowled out for just 92 when chasing 127 runs for victory.

And the skipper admitted that it was disappointing to lose for the first time this season, although he said they would not dwell on it as they look for a return to their early-season good form.

"Hopefully, it was a just a small blip," he said.

"We didn't play as well as we have done in previous weeks and it was disappointing.

"We should really have been chasing 90 off rather than 127 and in a low-scoring match that can make a big difference.

"But we didn't bowl well enough."

Joblin added that despite the defeat, there were still positives, including that fact that he said no one gave their wicket away on what he described as an "incredibly tricky" wicket to bat on.

He said: "People were bowled out by good balls and to be fair to them they bowled well.

Indeed, opening bowler George Dale (3-25) bowled an impressive opening spell, before his older brother Rob Dale (5-14) came on to eclipse him with a devastating spell.

And Joblin, who top scored with 21, said the credit had to go to the Farnham duo.

"The opening bowler bowled incredibly well and then his older brother bowled some extraordinary balls with great length, which is very difficult to bat against.

"But we won't dwell on it and hopefully we will bounce back this week."

Meanwhile, Joblin said the club enjoyed a good President's Day on Sunday, when more than 200 people attended Fetcham Grove for a 30-over match between Leatherhead and a President's XI captained by Shaun Udal and featuring Hampshire's former England star Dimi Mascarenhas.

Leatherhead won the match by five wickets and Joblin said it was good to see so many people enjoy the day at the club, which also included a barbecue and entertainment.

"We were blessed with the weather," he said.

"It was a great day for the club and we are so grateful to Dimi and Alec Stewart, who both did a question and answer session too."

Leatherhead are at home to Beddington on Saturday.
