Travellers who have spent three weeks on Hooley Recreation Ground have moved on to green space in the middle of Merstham. Around 30 caravans arrived on the Brook Road Open Space, between Brook Road and Wood Street, last night. They moved on the same day Reigate and Banstead Borough Council won a court injunction to evict 18 caravans from the Hooley rec in Brighton Road. The travellers arrived there on Wednesday July 3. The following day the borough council issued them with a 'Notice to Quit' by July 9, but the travellers refused to move. The council then took their case to Croydon County Court, where it was heard yesterday (Tuesday). They secured an order which gave the travellers until this morning to leave. Last night caravans left Hooley and moved to Merstham. Borough councillor for the area Graeme Crome, who went down to Brook Road, said 30 caravans had arrived on the green space. "All possible action will be taken to ensure they are moved on as quickly as possible," he said.. A large police presence was in Merstham on Tuesday evening. Officers were not there to deal with a specific crime but to prevent a breach of the peace. Robin Davis, parks and countryside manager said this morning: "An order for possession [at the Hoolee site] was granted by Croydon County Court on Tuesday. A notice was served requesting they leave the site by 10am today (Wednesday). The caravans have now all left the site and our officers are beginning the clear up. "Some of the caravans at Hooley Recreation Ground have now moved onto Brook Road Open Space in Merstham. We are currently working to lodge a possession claim with the appropriate county court."
