Police have cordoned off Tunnel Road in Reigate.
Officers have not yet released information about the nature of the incident but the Mirror understands it was a sexual assault.
The popular throughfare has been closed since the early hours of this morning.
Police tape is currently stretched across between the Market Stores and Cafe Rouge.
It is believed the incident happened overnight.
Member of the public report a sexual assault took place in the area but police have yet to confirm reports.
Shop owners are in the dark as to the exact nature of the incident
@martinsaunders posted on Twitter: "The tunnel in #Reigate has been cordoned off at both ends- police guarding it. Hope that's not as serious as it looks."
@richrey1 added: "Tunnel with the caves in Reigate cordoned off by the police.... Interesting.."
The blockage has caused delays for commuters in the town who cannot get direct access to the station.
