Friendly rivalry is spurring on a Lingfield bobby to mark as many bikes as possible to deter would-be thieves. PC Bill Kirsch wants to mark more than 60 push bikes with a luminous yellow sticker in a bid to beat his colleagues in Oxted, who last month marked around 37 push bikes in the town. He said: "I want to try and beat my colleagues in Oxted. It is friendly competition. And besides, we want as many people to come along as possible." Along with marking the bikes, they will also be registered on a national database, and in partnership with Brands Cycles in Felbridge, people will receive a 10 per cent discount voucher for the shop. "A lot of people like to use their push bikes because this is a beautiful area with lots of countryside," he added. "Quite often we see push bikes abandoned in the countryside or by the side of the road and we have no way of identifying who they belong to – registering will help us find the owner if it is found." The event will be held on Saturday, August 24 between 11am and 3pm at Lingfield and Dormansland Community Centre, off Lingfield High Street.
