REIGATE MP Crispin Blunt has voiced concerns over the re-roling of Downview Prison.
The prison will be re-classed from a women's prison to a category C male prison under proposals from prisons minister Jeremy Wright.
But Mr Blunt, himself a former prisons minister, wants assurances the rehabilitation of prisoners will not be affected.
He said: "Prisons minister, Jeremy Wright, alerted me to [the] announcement and in that conversation I sought assurances from him that existing sentence plans for the prisoners affected by the move will continue in their new institution, so that their rehabilitation is not undermined."
Mr Blunt expressed concerns that rehabilitation work done by the Rehabilitation of Addicted Prisoners Trust was lost when the prison was originally re-classified from a male to female prison in 2001.
At the time relocated prisoners lost out on the service when they were moved to facilities where it was not available.
Mr Blunt added: "If we want prison to work, there needs to be continuity in rehabilitation and education programmes, otherwise there is no realistic possibility of them being effective.
"I am pleased that the overall number of prisoners is falling, which is why this decision has been taken, but many of these inmates are some of the most vulnerable people within the prison system which makes is so much more important that this change is handled properly."
Downview was rocked by scandal two years ago when one of the governors, Russell Thorne, was jailed for having a three-year affair with an inmate.
