DORKING Wanderers moved to the top of the Sussex County League Division One after a 2-0 win against East Grinstead Town on Tuesday.

And they did it with a makeshift side, with a number of key players absent, including Tom Tolfrey, Sean Bradley, Jerome Beckles and Chris Davidson.

But boss Marc White says they are not getting carried away, despite reaching the summit and continuing their unbeaten run.

He said: "We knew we were strong at the back and we had a gameplan to try and get a goal and defend it.

"We did that and got a second late on and I am delighted."

The visitors enjoyed much of the possession, but a failure to make the most of several chances cost them dear, as Matt Harmsworth and Thomas Nyarko struck to send Wanderers top.

Dave Gellatly spurned a couple of opportunities for the Wasps in a first half that they largely dominated, although Wanderers came close themselves through Mark Bevan and Peter Rapson, with both being denied by Grinstead goalkeeper Mark Fox.

But Fox could do nothing to stop Harmsworth in the 38th minute, with the striker ignoring calls for an offside to latch on to Rapson's throughball and calmly curl a shot past Fox and into the bottom corner to give his side a 1-0 lead at the break.

The game resorted to a similar pattern in the second half, with Grinstead enjoying a lot of time on the ball, but Wasps substitute Michael Belli spurned a couple of good chances after coming on.

And with Grinstead chasing the game, Wanderers took advantage on the break in the final few minutes, with Nyarko crashing the ball home at the second attempt to seal victory and send his side to the summit.

Wanderers now sit top of the league with 14 points from six matches.
