LEATHERHEAD produced an upset to defeat Ryman Premier Division side Carshalton Athletic on Saturday and progress to the second round qualifying of the FA Cup.

The Tanners, who were still smarting from conceding two late goals to draw 2-2 at bottom club Eastbourne Town last Wednesday, came from behind to defeat their opponents, who currently sit third from bottom in the league above with just one win from nine matches this season.

And Leatherhead manager Richard Brady said it was a deserved victory for his side.

He said: "We didn't start the game very well and went 1-0 down, but we changed a few things and once we got the goal, we played much better and it was a deserved win in the end."

However, Carshalton started the brighter of the two sides at Fetcham Grove and took the lead in the 23rd minute when Steve Butterworth crashed the ball home from close range after a knockdown from a corner.

The goal seemed to stun Leatherhead into life though and the Tanners came close to equalising on 33 minutes after Matt Smart's free kick was deflected onto the bar by Carshalton defender Paris Hamilton Downes.

That was a let-off for the visitors but the respite was brief as just two minutes later, the Tanners were on level terms.

And it came from another accurate Smart delivery, with Tom Bradbrook rising highest to nod home the ball and draw the hosts level.

From then on, Leatherhead seized control and after the break, there only looked like being one winner.

Allan Tait went close before a brief scare at the other end, but the Tanners finally got the winner 13 minutes from time, when Tait met a Smart corner with his head. Carshalton goalkeeper Dean Snedeker could only parry the effort into the path of Adam Burchell, who smashed home from close range.

Carshalton's misery was completed in injury time with the dismissal of captain Adriano Moraes for a poor tackle on Elie Kayembe, but it made little difference to the outcome as the Tanners booked their spot in the second round of qualifying, where they will now meet Hellenic League outfit Binfield.

And Brady says his team will not take anything for granted against the Bracknell side, despite the Tanners going into the game as favourites being from one step higher in the non-league football pyramid.
