Woodley's winner for Carshalton Athletic

Carshalton Athletic won a home game at the fifth time of asking by beating in-form Billericay Town on Saturday, writes James Barrett.

Kieran Woodley's strike on the stroke of half-time, coupled with a resolute second-half defensive display, was enough for the Robins to end the Essex visitors' three game winning streak.

"The way we dug in during the second-half was superb and I particularly pleased with how we dealt with their set-pieces, an area that has cost us soft goals recently," said manager Tommy Williams.

That hard work protected an accomplished opening 45 minutes as Carshalton goalkeeper Dean Snedker only had one real save to make, but his opposite number was single-handedly keeping the scoreline blank.

"We created chances in the first-half and I was thinking 'here we go again' because their goalkeeper made three outstanding saves," Williams added. "We know some of our performances have been better than our league position suggests, so it was encouraging to see the boys keep plugging away and Kieran took his goal well at a crucial time."

The result gives Carshalton seven points to date but they still reside in the bottom four, so they will not be basking in the glory of a much-needed victory for too long as their next game comes this Tuesday.

"Few would've bet against Billericay but we fully deserved what we got in the end," he added. "This victory gives us a lift but, more importantly, we'll keep working hard and believing in ourselves as we look build on it."

Carshalton welcome Harrow Borough to Colston Avenue on Tuesday 24th September, kick-off 7.45pm.
