Calls for 20mph speed limit on dangerous Caterham road

SPEED restrictions should be introduced on one of Caterham's most clogged roads, residents have urged.

Stafford Road is notoriously double parked for much of its one-mile length but is still used by some motorists as a rat-run, they claim.

Craig Anderson has set up a petition calling for a 20mph speed limit there.

He said: "The northern end of Stafford Road – running from Burntwood Lane and past Milner Approach – is far too narrow to support the current speed limit of 30mph.

"This is a double-parked, residential road, with little access to the easterly pavement, and virtually no access to the westerly pavement.

"Residents are forced to walk into the road in order to access their cars, or to move further along the street.

"The current speed limit makes this extraordinarily dangerous."

Several residents have suffered vehicle damage, or had family cats die under the wheels of vehicles because of the excessive speed of traffic there, added Mr Anderson.

He said unless something is done, it would only be a matter of time before a resident is seriously injured.

A two-car smash in January 2013 resulted in a vehicle sliding off the road and plunging down a slope towards homes.

Caterham Valley parish councillor Mark Jones said: "Stafford Road deserves the 20mph limit.

"We are over-subscribed with cars from both residents and commuters, and yet people cutting through still insist on driving too fast and dangerously.

"People forget we have a recreation park that, in the summer, is full of young people."

He added: "It's fantastic that residents are speaking up with their concerns, and now I just hope the powers-that-be listen to them."

However David Lee, who lives in nearby Milner Close, said: "It certainly is a dangerous road with blind spots and solid parking. There could be a nasty accident if a child or animal nipped out.

"But I would be surprised if cars were able to do much over 20mph there."

Caterham Valley county councillor Sally Marks said she would liaise with Surrey County Council's highways unit, who can investigate the issue.

The petition – http://peti tions.surreycc.gov.uk/staffordroad – is online until October 22.
