DON'T just work... work it.
That's the message behind a new Surrey-wide initiative to increase fitness and health in the workplace.
Active Surrey has launched a programme to fit into the average working day – encouraging staff out of their offices and into sport and keep fit.
On offer are enticements such as lunchtime express spinning sessions, badminton, swimfit classes and post-work softball.
Experienced coaches will be on hand to offer guidance and support.
More than 20 different sports will be available across the county and users can build their own online profile to share fitness and activity ideas with colleagues. Active Surrey spokeswoman Suzie Wall said: "For businesses, this programme aims to boost employee wellbeing and job satisfaction levels which, in turn, can boost productivity and profit from the businesses' perspective.
"Regular sports participation also reduces stress levels and employee absenteeism, and boosts team morale."
The Work It programme has been designed firmly with businesses and their employees in mind.
"Research shows that 60 per cent of people improve performance at work on days when they exercise," she said.
"Work It will enable employees to try something new and boost their confidence and wellbeing in both their private and professional lives."
A pilot event last year saw 153 people from across 22 Surrey firms take part in softball, hockey and cricket.
Now there are many activities targeted at beginners or those who have not played in years.
Regular competitions and prize draws will take place throughout the summer and business leagues will add a competitive edge.
Activities start from £3, with some offering the first session free.
There are also competitions available, with prizes of fitness equipment.
A Work It website, which is free to sign up to, outlines ways to increase fitness levels in the workforce.
The first 100 people to sign up to Work It will automatically be entered into a prize draw for a Fitbit Flex – a wireless activity wristband.
